Community spirit, record runs and Olympic dreams fuel momentum for Australia’s

    fastest-growing sport.

It was a weekend of camaraderie, action and pure adrenaline as athletes from across Australia and New

Zealand came together for the 2025 Australian Speed Championships in Melbourne, Victoria.

“Speed climbing is fast, electric and impossible not to get caught up in,” said Sport Climbing NSW

Vice President, Jodie Metaxiotis. “But what really stood out was the community – athletes

cheering each other on, celebrating PBs, and inspiring new climbers to give it a go.”

In a showcase of how far the sport has come in the region, NSW athletes brought home eight medals: 4

gold, 3 silver and 1 bronze, across Open, Masters and Youth divisions. Beyond the results, it was the

teamwork, encouragement, and shared energy that defined the event.

The Open A Men’s final delivered edge-of-your-seat excitement, with Aaron Mattes storming to the 2025

Australian Championship title in a personal best 6.249 seconds, narrowly defeating NSW teammate

    Erasmus Darwin.

Hayden Barton – the current Australian record holder, who set the fastest qualification times of the

weekend and has been competing on the IFSC World Cup circuit – rounded out the podium in third, a

testament to NSW’s world-class pace and the strength of friendly rivalry.

NSW’s success didn’t stop there, with 1st and 2nd places in Australia for the Open Women, plus strong

results in U19 Female (2nd), U17 Male (1st) and Masters Male (1st) categories.

With the Brisbane 2032 Olympics on the horizon, speed climbing is capturing imaginations across NSW –

a sport where athletes sprint head-to-head up a 15-metre wall in mere seconds, powered by precision,

explosive strength and nerves of steel.

The NSW community is growing fast, and everyone’s invited to be part of it.

“These results showcase the strength and spirit of our climbing community,” said Tara Davidson,

President of Sport Climbing NSW. “It’s inspiring to see athletes, volunteers, and gyms all working

together to build something that will carry momentum right through to Brisbane 2032.”

    Want to experience speed climbing?

Sport Climbing NSW invites everyone to experience the thrill of speed climbing at Fast Friday, held at

Elevate Climbing Gym, Villawood, on 5 December at 6:30 pm.

Fast Friday is a monthly, fun and free community event where every age and ability can sprint up the wall,

cheer each other on, and meet the NSW speed team in a welcoming, social environment.

Sport Climbing NSW also extends its thanks to the national body Sport Climbing Australia and the

incredible volunteers who made the national event possible.

The NSW climbing community is helping shape the future of Para Climbing in Australia, with a strong

contingent representing the state at the recent 2025 Australian Para Climbing Championships in

    Melbourne, Victoria.

Sport Climbing NSW brought the largest Para Climbing team to the event – a milestone made possible

through close collaboration with Able Climbing NSW, Elevate Climbing, and the national body, Sport

    Climbing Australia.

Together, these organisations are creating inclusive pathways for adaptive athletes to discover sport

climbing, train regularly, and compete on the state and national stage – with clear pathways to World Cup

and Paralympic competition through Sport Climbing Australia. Several NSW climbers have already

represented Australia on the IFSC Para Climbing World Cup and World Championship circuit this year,

helping to put NSW Para Climbers on the map.

Among them was Angus Taylor, who secured first place in the AL2 category, one of the most competitive

divisions of the weekend. Based in the Blue Mountains, Angus has been climbing outdoors for more than

a decade before discovering the world of competitive Para Climbing. He now trains regularly at Elevate

Climbing in Villawood and represents Australia on the international circuit. His steady focus and

commitment to progression have helped raise awareness of Para Climbing in NSW and beyond.

For Sophie Weaver, the youngest member of the NSW team, this year’s event marked her first Open

Nationals in the B3 (vision-impaired) category. Sophie first discovered climbing through trips to the gym

with her dad, where she quickly developed a love for the sport. Guided by her coach and sight guide Alex

MacInnes and a strong network of supporters, Sophie’s determination and quiet confidence capture the

inclusive and encouraging spirit of Para Climbing in NSW.

“Para Climbing in NSW is still growing, but the energy and momentum are really building,” said

Tara Davidson, President of Sport Climbing NSW. “It’s such a community effort – athletes,

coaches, gyms and volunteers all coming together to make climbing accessible and welcoming for

everyone. With Para Climbing heading toward LA 2028, it’s a really exciting time to be part of it.”

Para Climbing will make its Paralympic debut at the LA 2028 Games – a historic step for the sport globally,

and NSW athletes and volunteers are proud to be part of building that future.

    Get involved

Sport Climbing NSW supports the growth of Para Climbing across the state through inclusive programs

such as Able Climbing NSW and partnerships that create pathways from grassroots to the national level.

The final Adaptive Climbing Come & Try Day for 2025 will take place on Sunday, 23 November at Elevate

Climbing in Villawood. It’s open to anyone curious about adaptive climbing, whether you’re an athlete,

    support worker, coach or volunteer.

We’re thrilled to announce the appointment of Rebecca Hamilton as the first Chief Executive Officer of Sport Climbing Australia.

Beck brings a wealth of experience in leading national sporting organisations, most recently as CEO of Judo Australia, and has held senior roles across rugby, marketing, and communications. She is a confident and strategic leader with a strong understanding of the high-performance and participation landscapes, robust ties to AIS and AOC, and a deep commitment to growing sport from grassroots through to elite levels.

As CEO, Beck will lead the delivery of SCA’s strategic vision, drive organisational growth, and ensure operational excellence as we continue to build toward Brisbane 2032 and beyond.

Please join us in giving Beck a warm welcome to the climbing community!

A message from our Chair, Phil Goebel:

On behalf of the Sport Climbing Australia board and the broader SCA community I want to welcome Beck Hamilton as our first CEO. Beck's appointment represents SCA moving to our next chapter of growth and maturity as an organisation. Beck brings with her an incredible amount of skills and experience to build on the growth momentum SCA has and take us to the next level of building a vibrant and connected climbing community. I am so excited about this next period of growth for SCA and am looking forward to working with Beck and with all SCA stakeholders together as we strive for excellence.

A message from our new CEO, Beck Hamilton:

The SCA Board and Member organisations of Sport Climbing in Australia have been brilliant in their execution during a time of rapid growth in Australia. Sport Climbing on the Olympic and Paralympic stage whilst still in its infancy in Australia is poised for success. Coupled with almost 100 climbing gyms nationally, community participation is headed north at great speed. It is a pleasure to be involved and I thank everyone for the warm welcome.
