The final round of the 2008 Pinnacle Social Series was held at Urban Climb on 12 October, and was the now-traditional pumpfest. This event also doubled as the QLD state bouldering championships, with a super final to decide the bouldering champions for 2008. Almost 80 climbers competed on the day, which underlines the popularity of the pumpfest format, and the climbers were challenged by over 70 problems set by Matt Cochrane and his route-setting team. Competitors and volunteers were sporting the new Pinnacle Sports T-shirts, which were generously donated by Pinnacle for any climber who competed in three or more events through the year, and AJ from Pinnacle was present throughout the day to hand out the series prizes, which totalled more than $6000 in value. A huge thank-you once again to AJ and Paul from Pinnacle for their continued support and sponsorship. Thanks also to Alex and Peta at Urban Climb for hosting the event again, and to Gaynor for holding the fort on the day.
The morning session kicked off smoothly, with the age-group categories climbing hard, ably spotted by parents and friends. Clay Hall, Al Earley and Lucy Stirling continued their unbroken run of first placings in their categories, while six-year-old Hannah Christie caused an upset by winning the 9 Years and Under Girls category.
The second session brought out the big guns, with Daniel Tirado-Lopez and Tom O’Halloran vying for top spot and the series win. In the end, Daniel took out the day and the series by five points, with Tom coming second. Cass Crane withdrew early in the competition, leaving the way open for Mindy Coles and Emily Amies to fight it out for the open female win, with Emily prevailing in the end. James Campbell took out the Youth A Male category, preserving his perfect record for the year, as did Steph Larkin in Youth A Female, and Sean Doyle muscled his way to a win in Masters Male in his first series.
The top three scorers in the Open Male and Female categories went through to the super final to decide state rankings: Daniel, Tom and Ben Spokes were the guys, and Emily, Mindy and Steph Larkin the girls. Emily continued her strong form to take out the female State Title for 2008, with Mindy second and Steph third, while Tom outpointed Daniel to win the male State Title with Ben coming third.

It’s time to thank all the volunteers who made the series possible this year. Matt Cochrane was head route-setter, and provided a great selection of courses throughout the various competition formats with his team. Suzie O’Halloran and Lea Cunninghame ran the administration desk with great efficiency, and everyone was greeted with a smile when they rolled up to register. Peter O’Halloran was our marketing and promotions guru, as well as designing and printing all of the certificates and posters for the series. Mindy Coles was head judge, and tried her hand at route-setting, scheduling volunteers and most other jobs as well. Cass Crane, Tom O’Halloran and Ben Spokes helped out at every competition with judging, belaying and route-setting; and Phil Box played host for the Toowoomba competition and spent a lot of time up a rope taking action photos at the comps. Heaps of other people volunteered on the day, and a huge THANK YOU goes out to everyone who set, belayed, judged, spotted, sold raffle tickets, burned snags on the BBQ or helped out in any way. These competitions can’t get off the ground without you guys.
