A new format, some outdoor speed and plenty of new faces were the features of round 1 of the 2007 QLD Social Series, held last Sunday at Pine Rivers PCYC. More than 60 climbers competed in (we believe) the first mixed-format event of its kind in Australia – difficulty, bouldering and speed climbing in the same event. The feedback we received was overwhelmingly positive: everyone loved the new format, and we're going to hold another event of this type at Paramount at Burleigh Heads in August, so make sure you don't miss out. There were some great problems, and a huge amount of variation in the routes.
The speed climbing was a fantastic event in its own right. Pine Rivers PCYC has purchased the climbing wall from the TV show “Gladiators”, and set it up outside, and we used this for the speed climbing comp. It's high, textured and heaps of fun, and it showed that speed climbing is something a lot of people disregard; however, a large number of placings on the day were decided based on the speed climb, so get into practice now for the event at Paramount.
While a few regulars didn't make it on the day, we had a great roll-up for the Novice Male and Female categories, which is fantastic to see. The altered age cutoff for Masters (from 40 down to 35) saw a couple of extra competitors there as well, but there are still plenty of categories that are under-represented (Janelle would love some company in Masters Female, for example). There have been plenty of readjustments in the age-group categories as many competitors have moved up a category from last year, and it promises to be a hotly-contested series. Tom O'Halloran stepped up from the age-group competition to swipe the Open win from Ben Marturia, while dad Pete made it a family affair by taking out the Masters Male.
Next event will be a traditional difficulty event at Adrenalin in Toowoomba, to be held on Sunday 29 April. There will be a lead-climbing workshop at Phil Box's shed on the Saturday afternoon, for anyone who's keen. It's a great opportunity for anyone heading down to Youth Nationals the following weekend to get a last bit of lead practice in. More information on these events to follow soon.
