Pinnacle Sport Queensland Social Series Round4

Pinnacle Sports

Pinnacle Sport sponsors the SCA Queensland Social Series

A steep flake, tough roof, bewildering rock feature, axe head arete and 360 degree boulder traverse all featured in Round 4 of the Pinnacle Sports Social Series on July 16 held at the Gold Coast's Paramount Adventure Centre.

A group of mainly young climbers spent a long Saturday setting a great variety of difficult routes, which led to some low scoring and a few curses. Thanks go to Matt Johnson, Matt Cochrane, Pete and Cass Crane, Ben Marturia, Jordan Kerle, Matt Deshon, Mindy Coles and head route setter Ben Knight for their efforts on the highest walls of the season. Route setters who also compete, have their scores docked to counter the advantage they otherwise gain. All climbers are indebted to them for their selfless efforts.

Comfortable gym climbers were forced out of their comfort zones by not only the variety of wall features, but also the frequent cruxy moves and unforgiving sequences. Some Masters division climbers, who were affected by mid winter arthritic blues, otherwise known as apathy, refused one of their set climbs, preferring a tough roof section instead – allowable under the ‘crusty ones' interpretation of social comp rules.

Lee Cujes was the only climber to finish the concrete rock-feature, although local knowledge helped eventual Open winner Jarrod Hall go close. It was an unusual climb for a comp and demoralised many before they started. Its shallow finger-cracks eventually defeated most of those who did manage to traverse the initial face. Congratulations go to anyone who made it past the ‘Y'.

Emily Amies topped the women's' division in only her second comp climb since giving birth to Clayton. Cass Crane took second after a route setters' adjustment to her score and Sam Coles was third.

Tom O'Halloran, in Youth B, was the only climber on the day to top out on all his climbs. Jordan Kerle won Youth C and will have a showdown with Mitchell Cunninghame in the final round at Urban Climb on September 17 to sort out the series winner. There will be a similar battle for top place in the Girls Under 9 between Brittany Cunninghame and Nikita-Anne Woods and Youth A between Ben Marturia and Dan Comerford.

Round 5 will be held on Sunday September 17 at Urban Climb

2/220 Montague Rd West End

It will be a boulder pumpfest - climb for two hours and add up your best 10 scores for a total.
