Pinnacle Sport Queensland Social Series Round 2

Difficult climbs and gun teens up for the challenge dominated Round 2 of the Pinnacle Sports Social Series held at The Rock, Browns Plains on Sunday 21 May.

The plaintive cry of one seasoned performer summed up the day, “I can't wait to turn 40 and enter the Masters, there's too many young guns coming through Opens.”

Five young climbers - Pete Crane, Matt Johnston, Ben Marturia, Tom O'Halloran and Chris Trengrove - stepped-up from their ‘aged' category to compete in the opens; four finished in the top six.

Climbers dominated the wall during Round 1 of the series last month. However, in this event the route setters turned the tables. They tweaked the difficulty, split the top competitors, avoided tied results and had the last laugh.

A tall overhanging arête, aptly named ‘The Axe', never fell, despite plenty of desperate chopping around hold 16. The sequency purple on Station 3 - with grippy holds reminiscent of Brooyar's rough eroded sandstone - managed to tangle and spit all but a handful of climbers with its cross-throughs and busy feet. Other tough climbs were the progressive overhang's sit-start red, and its green neighbour, both of which tested contact strength and technique. For a short straight slab climb, the blue at Station 5 was packed with tough moves and a wicked finish. Congratulations to Ben Marturia, the only person to successfully match the final hold on this great climb.

There was another good turn out of school-aged climbers and their parents on the day.

Brittany Cunninghame scored a clear victory in the Under 9 Girls, while her brother Mitchell was pipped out of first by 0.1 of a point by Jordan Kerle in Youth C. A gritty effort from Edwina Peterson in the Youth B Female was rewarded with first place.

Tom O'Halloran managed to crank out a few chin-ups to display ‘control' of finishing holds as he topped-out three climbs in winning Youth B with an almost perfect 99.8 points. The hard-training 13-year old later climbed within two points of stealing the Open Male category.

Cass Crane cruised to win the Open Female while her brother Pete took out the Open Male by a slap over Matt Johnston. Ben Marturia originally finished second in the opens, but was relegated back to fifth place after a count-back for climbs he completed earlier in Youth A.

Brett Ray blitzed the field winning the speed-climbing with 3.91 seconds; Cass Crane was the fastest woman, clocking 5.28 seconds.

Challenging routes, top organisation, friendly officials, fresh steak burgers and generous gift vouchers from Pinnacle Sports all made for a great days climbing.

op effort for the day goes to Glenn Ferguson, who turned up to climb despite an altercation between his finger and a power saw earlier in the day.
