The Australian team were celebtraing last week after some great peformancs by our climbers at the recent World Youth Championships held in Imst, Austria.Team captain, Daniel Fisher, lead the way , making the semi finals in the Junior males, finishing a very creditable 19th. This was followed up by Art Ho Bayly who then put in a great heat for the speed event in the Junior males, qualifying in 16th place for the finals. Despite drawing the fastest qualifier in his next round, and subsequently being knocked out of the comp, Art's time in the final was good enough to see him move into 13th place overall.
Results generally were very pleasing. Lucy Stirling improved on her placing from 2010, with a 41st in the lead event in the Junior females. Other results saw - Scott Pritchard (55th) and Art Ho Bayly (59th) in Junior lead males; Loesje Fletcher (58th) in Youth A females,; Matthew Tsang (55th) and Kyle Brandon- in his first WYC experience-(71st) in Youth A males; and our young first time WYC competitors in Youth B females- Judith Carroll (58th), Lindsay Fletcher (66th) and Jemima Matters (70th). Given some fields had up to 90 competitors these results were terrific.
Well done to all involved and a big thankyou in particular to team coaches, Rob and Carlie Le Breton on preparing the team so well this year.
The weekend of July 30/31 saw the SCA Nationals held at Bayside Rock in Victoria. It was also the second round of the Oceania Series and saw a small buut very compeititve team from New Zealand make thr trip across the "ditch"to take on the Aussie climbers. The competition over the two days was awsome, ensuring that we were able to see Australia's best climbers tackle some some great route setting.
It was one of the best attended national events we have had recently with just 130 climbers involved. It proved also to be a great final hitout for many of our WYC team before they head to Europe later this month for the World Youth Championships in Austria. Congratulations to Daniel Fisher and Sam Berry in taking out their respective Open categories.
A big thankyou to all involved with the organisation of the event and to Bayside Rock for hosting a well run competition.
Sport Climbing is one of the 8 sports shortlisted for the Olympics 2020. The announcement was made by the IOC ahead of the the 123rd IOC session in Durban, South Africa. The sports in the shortlist will be considered for inclusion in the sports programme of the 2020 Summer Olympiad. Some of the sports included in the list - like baseball and softball - were dropped from the Olympics in 2008, and are looking for reinstatement, while others are not new to the list of possible candidates (karate, roller sports, squash). Toghether with wakeboard and wushu, sport climbing is for the first time ever being considered as a possible addition to the program. The IOC will take the final decision on the sport to be admitted in 2013, at the 125th IOC session in Buenos Aires. The comments by IOC President Jacques Rogge on the inclusion of slopestyle events in skiiing and snowboarding in 2014 may sound as a good omen for sport climbing. "It is growing very fast - said Rogge. You have young, dedicated, spectacular athletes..." which may as well apply to our sport!
Results from the Mountain Equipment 2011 NSW State Bouldering Titles and Round 1 of the Mountain Equipment Sydney Bouldering Series have now been posted in the results section. A fantastic turn out by the climbing community with 245 compeitors taking part. Thanks heaps to Steve, Sarah and the whole Climb Fit crew who put in the hard work to make it happen. The results are separated as we only included the Open A, Youth A, Youth B, Youth C and Youth D categories as part of the NSW State Bouldering Titles.
The Revolution Team competition has been a huge success. After Rd 1, Climb Fit, the locals, have smashed the compeition. It will be interesting to see if they can keep it up over the next three months.
The Oceania Series is a new concept so at this stage full details are still being worked out. The series this year will consist of 2 events; one in Australia, one in New Zealand.
The New Zealand leg will be held in conjunction with their National Cup Round 4 event. This is on the 9th and 10th of July. It is in the middle of the NSW and Victorian school holidays (and probably other states too). All the details for this event can be found at: Oceania NZ
The first leg of the Oceania Serieswas held in New Zealand over the weekend of July 9 and 10. This will now be followed up with the second leg of the Oceania Series here in Australia over the weekend of July 30 and 31. The Australian leg will be held at Bayside Rock in Melbourne and will also double as our Nationals event for 2011. Climbers are encouraged to start getting your flights organised and accommodation booked!
All the results from the weekend are now available on the results page. Great day was had by all with many (many) first time competitors having a go. Congratulations to all and a big thankyou to James Kassay and his staff for their work in running the comp. Links to photos from the event can be found on the SCA facebook page.

The 2011 Calendar is regularly being established- if you check now you will see all the NSW Tour de Corde dates, along with the NSW State Lead Championships, which will once again double as the qualifier for the 2011 World Youth Championships and Open World Cup events.
